Vani's Story
I graduated from Wahconah RHS a year early in '76, but I was a member of the class of '77. Went to Bcc, got an Associates in '78. Got married in India the "traditional Indian way." He was not the right one. I went to Case Western Reserve in Cleveland 1979 to 80. Had my daughter Nov. 1980, so had to quit school. Found the courage to file for a divorce in 1985. Went back to School. Northwestern University Dental School, graduated in 1989. My divorce took 4 years, so i was technically married to this guy for 11 years.
In the meantime, I met and fell in love with a white guy. Much to my family's horror. We married in 1989. The USAF paid for his Med school at Northwestern, so I followed him on all his assignments. Worked in Fairborn, Ohio, and Colorado Springs. Taught at the University of Texas Dental School in San Antonio for 2 years, and finally joined the...Expand for more
Air Force myself.
I loved being a dentist in the Air Force. I'd never fully realized how proud I was to be an American in uniform. Got out of the military in 1998. Moved to my husband's home town of Peoria, Ill. Been here ever since.
I have 3 kids. Shri, my daughter from my first life is a lawyer in Washington DC. My son Matthew is the smartest, most charming person I've ever met (Ok, I am biased.) He is a freshman at U of Illinois, Champaign in Chemical Engineering. My baby (16) is a junior in High School. She is the sweetest smartest person, and truly God's blessing and reward for all the hardships in my life.
I love being a dentist. 20 years of practice, and I think I'm good at it now. I volunteer for a program aimed at "high risk youth" in the community. It's giving me purpose as we become "empty nesters."
